so the same news organization that released these obvious fakes encouraged the kerry people to contact the source. this very conveniently allows news organizations to write headlines like "Kerry Aide Talked to Retired Guard Officer." Does this stink or what? I haven't really been following the story so there may be some facts that make my crazy conspiracy theory a non-starter. can you tell me what those facts are?

I think that this will do more damage to CBS/Rather, or at least should. I think it is accepted that opposition parties dig dirt on opponent and release it to media, albeit embarressing if caught, but it is pretty unheard of for a news agency to dig up dirt and then direct it to a political campaign. Political collussion by CBS doesn't do to well for the perception of impartiality.
well, CBS and CBS news are going to be fine. Dan Rather will hurt, but I have a feeling this isn't really his deal. Some producer or editor or whatever should be fired, but those stakes are pretty small. One look at the headline tells you that linking Kerry to the memos is news. Idunno, we'll see how far the "Kerry campaign linked to the memos" story goes.
I heard on the radio that the producer of the story had been working on it for 5 years. This means it was well known she was working on this story, and had been asking for these memos for YEARS. It would have been tempting for someone to provide her with them for their own purposes.
I am surprised at your position. Isn't Rather as responisible for his underlings doings, as Bush is for his underlings failures? Both have the final authority over their operations.
I suspect that there will be a major purging at CBS, as viacom's financial interests can only be harmed by this "confirmation" of a perceived bias by CBS. I don't agree, but perception is just as important as reality, as News is valued on its reputation and perceived integrity.
that may be right, im not really sure. I was thinking that rather is more of a news reader than a proper journalist, but maybe that's doing him a disservice. and your right, that doesn't make him too different than bush. both are brands with something to lose. rather has more to lose than cbs, will there be a purge at cbs, i don't know.
i read that cbs went to the white house with these documents and the white house said they did not question the authenticity of the documents. why wouldn't they? its a valid question, although there may be a valid answer.
